Resumen


A characterization of mathematics in terms of families of mathematical practices is presented and it is argued that diversities within mathematics as a discipline, within cultural practices involving mathematics, and within mathematical practices in everyday lives are too often not visible within school mathematics. Arguments for the importance of diversity of all kinds are presented against a background of powerful political forces pulling towards homogenization. An attempt to implement our ideas is illustrated by reference to a professional development project intended to promote culturally responsive elementary mathematics education.
